After spending considerable time reading a blog from a news site where people were asked the question "Do 4WDs get a bad rap or are they a menace that should be kept off-road?", yet everyone takes these findings as gospel and the whole study was based on a test group of a mere 16 people, of which 11.5 of them (72%) were found to be agressive etc. Im sure if i hand selected my test group I could find a test group of lawn bowlers and find 72% of them agressive drivers. Does this mean that engaging in the sport of lawn bowls makes you an agressive driver? I doubt it.
People need to remove their head from their anus and view reality for a while. I dont doubt that agressive drivers drive 4wd's, but they drive cars, motorbikes, trucks, buses, ferrys and trains aswell. Should we ban all of them and just walk to work? 4wd's aren't what is dangerous, its the person behind the wheel, this applies to any form of motor vehicle transport, especially cars. Just because a car isn't as big no one cars as much, its only a small car it wont do as much damage.
Shouldnt we be focusing on educating all drivers to drive safely and in consideration for other road users? It makes sense to me, alot more sense than blaming a minority, after all, of all the vehicles on the road 4wd's only make up a very small percentage. In the month of December 2008, the RTA records a total of 15449 passenger cars newly registered onto NSW roads, yet only 2094 4wd's were newly registered in NSW that month. In November it was 13732 cars and 1798 4wd's. So, there are a hell of a lot more cars both already on the road and being added to the road than 4wd's. Yet its the 4wd's who always get the blame.
Now, back to the question at hand. Are 4wd's a menace? No i dont think they are, to simply lump 4wd owners into this category based on what they drive isn't overly fair. This news site mentions a study which was conducted revealing that "drivers went faster and braked harder in a 4WD and that special skills were needed to drive the vehicles through suburbia". Some people lack these skills regardless of what they drive. Fair enough driving a 4wd gives them the ability to potentially do more damage, but should all 4wd's be banned from city streets because some of their owners cant drive? A larger percentage of vehicle owners in general lack the skills required to handle a vehicle safely in suburbia and I know from my experience i am cut off or bothered on the road by car drivers alot more frequently than i am 4wders, in fact in over 10yrs of driving i think i could count on 1 hand the number of times a 4wd owner has done something wrong around me on the road. The majority of 4wd owners appreciate that their vehicle is larger and are more mindful off the car driving road users.
I really think that the minority of people who actually care enough to hack on 4wders need to find a hobby and get a life. We have a right to buy and drive our 4wd's on any road in australia. Or is it because they are jealous that they will never see the parts of Australia that we get to see in our 4wd's. Honestly, just get over it, and if you are going to sprout bullshit about 4wd's at least get your facts straight. One of the higher selling 4wd's on the market, the toyota Prado is extremely similar in size to a holden commodore station wagon, it just sits slightly higher above the ground.
